Men's Soccer Off To York, Pennsylvania for NCAA First Round Game

Indianapolis, Ind.  — St. Joseph's College (13-9) will play against York College of Pennsylvania (17-2-2) in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Tournament as the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Committee announced the field of 62 teams on Monday afternoon.

The 2012 Skyline Conference champion Golden Eagles will face the York Spartans who have made the NCAA Tournament in eight consecutive seasons.  The Eagles won the Skyline's automatic berth in the NCAA's via their 3-0 win over Mount Saint Mary in the conference's championship game.  The Spartans earned an automatic bid courtesy of a Capital Athletic Conference championship win over Mary Washington, 5-0.  With the victory, York also earned the right to host a pair of first round matches and a second round match on Saturday and Sunday.

In the other first round game to be held at the four-team regional, Rutgers-Camden will play Medaille.  Rutgers-Camden comes into the NCAA tournament with a mark of 16-2-2 as they defended their New Jersey Athletic Conference title with a 3-0 win over Rowan in the tournament finals. The Mavericks of Medaille are 17-2 having won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title with a 1-0 win over Penn State Behrend.

Game times for the weekend have now been announced and SJC's first game is at 11:00 am on Saturday. Saturday's winners will square off on Sunday with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.

The Golden Eagles will make their third NCAA Tournament appearance, having also clinched a berth in 2008 and 2009 as Skyline Champions in each of those years.  Under the direction of first-year head coach Tim Trava, St. Joseph's earned the top-seed in the Skyline Tournament as they posted an 8-1 conference record.

The team is led on the offensive end by senior John Dettori (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), who is currently ranked in the NCAA's top ten in points and goals.  He owns the team lead in goals (21) and points (50) and was named the Most Outstanding Player in the Skyline Tournament. Junior Fabio Alves (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) is second on the club with 12 goals and 32 points and Brendan O'Brien (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) leads with 10 assists. 

Defensively, seniors Michael Carroll (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and Dylan Evans (Bohemia, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) are the stalwarts for the Eagles in the backfield.  Senior goalkeeper Chris Muhs (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) posted a 13-7 record with nine shutouts.
