Eagles Tennis Pulls Off Narrow Victory over USMMA

Kings Point, N.Y. – The Golden Eagles (1-1) dropped four of the six single matches but swept the doubles matches 3-0 on their way to a 5-4 victory over USMMA (1-2).

Brandon Abbatiello (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) forced a third set in the first singles match of the day but dropped the third set 6-2. Adam Friel (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) picked up the first victory on the day for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat over his opponent. Tom O'Keefe (West Babylon, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) played well in his singles match, managing to tie the match at 5-5 in the first set but was beat out in the final two games and went on to lose the second set. Chris Corrao (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) won the first set of his match 6-3 but dropped the second and third sets 6-4. Kevin Karpowich (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) won both sets 6-4 in his singles victory and Stephen Fox (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) was defeated in two sets.

After losing four of the six singles, the Eagles would need spectacular performances on the court in the doubles matches and they delivered. Friel and O'Keefe won 8-4, Abbatiello and Karpowich picked off their opponent 8-5, and Corrao and Fox gave the Eagles the match victory with an 8-6 win.

The Eagles will host Purchase on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Staten Island on Sunday at 1 p.m.
