Men's Relay Team Breaks Record at SJC WInter Invitational

South Huntington, N.Y. – The Golden Eagles indoor track and field team hosted the first-ever St. Joseph's College Winter Invitational on Saturday at St. Anthony's High School, which featured over fifteen institutions from all three NCAA divisions and several junior colleges.  In the meet, SJC excelled as the team broke the men's programs 4x200 relay record.

Brian Frejka (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford), Mike O'Shea (Ronkonkoma, N.Y. / Connetquot), Nicholas Russo (Bellport, N.Y. / St. Anthony's), and Erik Haughn (Port Jefferson Station, N. Y. / Comsewogue) complied the men's 4x200 relay squad and placed fourth in the event, finishing in 1:39.58.  The team's score shattered the previous SJC record. 

Mike O'Shea, John Suchopar (Bohemia, N.Y./ Connetquot), Kevin Sanders (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River), and Mario Mayen (Center Moriches, N.Y./ Center Moriches) competed in the 4x400, with Mayen finishing with a split that was sub 50 seconds. 

Mayen's stellar performance continued Saturday morning as he placed second in the 400 meter with a time of 50.74.  That time beat Mayen's own 2013 record by a hundredth of second.  Mayen narrowly missed qualifying for the ECAC's by .25 seconds. 

St. Joseph's Kevin Sanders tallied a fifth place score in the 800 meter. 

For the women's team, AnnMarie Zigrosser (Bayport, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist) placed fifth in the 3000 meter and Ashley Arquer (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Copiague) placed sixth in the long jump (4.60m) followed by Jessica Pierno (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Bellport) (4.44m) who came in seventh.

St. Joseph's College will look to spring past their next slate of opponents as the team travels to the New Balance Track & Field Center in New York City for the Ramapo College Indoor Select on February 7 at 5:00 p.m.
