Super Mario Mayen Wins ECAC's 500m Individual Championship

New York, N. Y.Mario Mayen of the St. Joseph's men's indoor track and field team took the 500m race at the ECAC Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships by storm, capturing the event's individual crown with a time of 1:04.48.  This achievement marks the first time that a Golden Eagle has captured an individual ECAC championship. Today's time set a new St. Joseph's College program record by 1.5 seconds.

Mayen had the 500m's fastest closing 200 out of anyone in the field, as no other student-athlete broke 26 seconds in the final lap.  His time allowed SJC the most points (ten) that it has ever scored at an ECAC track meet.  The point total put St. Joseph's tied with nine other institutions for 26th place out of 48 teams at the New Balance Track & Field Center.

The junior from Center Moriches, N.Y. and Center Moriches High School had qualified for the ECAC's in both the 400m and 500m this season, but he had to choose which event to compete in.
