Patchogue, NY| Despite a game-high 27 points from senior Dominique Spann, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team suffered a 69-62 loss to the City College of New York in its home opener on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 1-5 (0-1) on the season while the Beavers improve to 3-2 (0-1).

CCNY registered the game's first six points with three consecutive layups in the first two minutes and would later open up a commanding 29-9 lead with 6:41 to play in the first half. The Golden Eagles then rallied in the half's final minutes, ending the opening frame on a 12-2 run to draw the game back to within 10 points (31-21) before the break.

Down 39-27 5:38 into the second half, junior Fernando Vazquez drained a three-pointer that sparked a 22-10 run for the Golden Eagles that tied the game at 49 with 6:58 to play in regulation. CCNY's Robert Dionisio scored converted a layup 27 seconds later, but Spann's three ball at 6:31 gave St. Joseph's its first lead of the game, albeit short lived. Dionisio scored off another layup and completed the three-point play 20 seconds later to inch the Beavers back in front, and before long the guests reestablished an eight-point lead with 1:44 to play. A Vazquez three-pointer with 24 seconds to play cut the deficit to five, but CCNY staved off the Golden Eagles and claimed the 69-62 win.

Spann's 27 points were not only a season-high, but a game-high. The Dowling transfer also contributed five rebounds and an assist. Vazquez went for 22 points, six rebounds and five assists, and junior Andy Laurent scored nine and recorded 10 rebounds and five assists.

St. Joseph's was the better team beyond the arc, shooting 24.2% compared to CCNY's 7.7%. The Beavers were also credited with more turnovers (14-10), but outscored the Golden Eagles 38-24 in the paint.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday, December 2nd and play host to Sarah Lawrence at 8:00 PM inside the Danzi Center. The women's basketball team will take on their Sarah Lawrence counterparts at 6:00 PM in the first part of the doubleheader.
