Vazquez Nets 100th Three in 68-67 Loss to Sage

Albany, NY| Junior Fernando Vazquez tallied his 100th career three-pointer as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team fell short against The Sage Colleges, who sank a late three-pointer to defeat the Golden Eagles 68-67 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Sage improves to 13-7 overall with a record of 11-4 in conference play, as SJC falls to 7-12 overall with a 6-8 record in league play.
Down 65-64 with 22 seconds to go in regulation, sophomore guard Isaiah Moore drained a three-pointer to give St. Joseph's a 67-65 lead. Sage assumed possession and Andre Robinson reeled off a three-point basket to the down the Golden Eagles 68-67.
In the first half, SJC maintained a one possession lead until the 9:22 mark, when Moore scored off a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 19-14 advantage. St. Joseph's pulled away by as much as eight after a three point basket by Joseph Savaglio. Sage sparked a 6-0 run to pull within two (28-26) at the 3:09 mark. Andy Laurent gave the Golden Eagles a four point cushion (38-34) closing out the half with a buzzer-beater three-ball. Moore was the key catalyst in the first shooting 5-for-8 from the field including a perfect 3-for-3 at the charity stripe.
Moore would finish with a game-high 21 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out an assist.
Vazquez shot 3-5 from three and recorded 17 points, three rebounds and three assists. His 100th career three-pointer came with 3:18 remaining in the first half. The bucket broke a 61-61 tie to put the Golden Eagles up 64-61. Vazquez—who becomes the 12th player in SJC history to record 100 career three-pointers—is currently first in the Skyline Conference made three-point field goals (50) and minutes played (38.2), second in free-throw percentage (82.7%) and fifth in scoring (16.3 PPG).
Andy Laurent provided 15 points, four rebounds and had a team-high six assists. Savaglio posted seven points and recorded seven steals off the bench.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Feburary 3 when they welcome Skyline rival SUNY Old Westbury to the Danzi Center for a 6:00 PM tip-off. Live stats will be available here.
