Softball Sweeps Farmingdale, Remains Unbeaten in Conference Play

Farmingdale, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team swept local rival Farmingdale State, 12-1 and 5-4, in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon and extended its winning streak to nine games in the process.

The Golden Eagles, who have not lost a game since returning home from the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL back on March 12, move to 11-7 on the year with the victories and sit atop the conference standings with a perfect 8-0 Skyline record. The Rams slip to 9-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play with the pair of losses.

SJC 12, Farmingdale 1 (5 innings)

After a scoreless first inning the Golden Eagles put up a five-spot in the top of the second. Sandra Foster (1-for-2) opened the scoring with an RBI single up the middle that saw Lyndsay Smocer (0-for-4) home, and Kristen Arbiter (2-for-5, 5 RBI's) wrapped the inning's scoring with a fly out to center that scored Valerie Scura (3-for-3, 3 runs, 2 RBI's).

Five more runs in the top of the third (10-0) made way for Madeline Sganga (3-for-4, 3 RBI's) and Arbiter's RBI singles in the top of fifth as SJC went up 12-0. Farmingdale's Kimberly Basile's sac fly in the bottom of the fifth would mark the game's final tally as St. Joseph's earned the 12-1 mercy-rule victory.

Picking up the win for the Golden Eagles was Lauren Buturla (3-4), who struck out one batter and allowed three hits in a complete-game effort.

SJC 5, Farmingdale 4

Arbiter (3-for-4, 3 RBI's) picked up where she left off and opened the scoring in the second game with an RBI double to left that scored Sganga (0-for-3) in the top of the first.

After knotting up the score in the bottom of the second, Farmingdale took the lead in the bottom of the third (3-1) when Christina Rayfield scored off an error and Breanna Susa notched an RBI single to center.

Elise Grau's (2-for-3) two-RBI single in the top of fourth tied the game at three, and in the top of the seventh Arbiter's first home run of the season put the guests up 5-3.

Farmingdale's Rayfield recorded a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh that scored Aleysha Midgett, but Sierra Cardenales' foul out with the next at bat ended the game as SJC completed the afternoon sweep with a 5-4 victory.

Theresa Cardello (5-2) collected the win for St. Joseph's, fanning a season-high eight batters and allowing two earned runs.
