Softball Earns Thursday Split With Mt. St. Vincent

Patchogue, NY| After a dramatic 6-5 come-from-behind victory in game one, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team dropped a 9-3 decision to ensure a split with the College of Mount St. Vincent in a Skyline Conference doubleheader at home on Thursday afternoon.

With the split the Golden Eagles and the Dolphins both sit at 13-9 on the year. In conference play, SJC moves to 9-1 and CMSV to 5-5.

SJC 6, CMSV 5 (10 innings)

The Dolphins posted a three-spot in the third inning and held that advantage until the bottom of the sixth when SJC tied the game at three. Lyndsay Smocer (3-for-3) opened the scoring for the hosts with a two-RBI triple to right, and Samantha Magerovich's (1-for-1) pinch-hit RBI triple with the next at bat knotted up the score.

Scoreless until the 10th, Mt. St. Vincent went up 5-3 with an RBI-single and an RBI-double. In the bottom half of the inning, Kristen Arbiter (3-for-5) tied the game at five with a two-RBI double, and Smocer earned SJC the walk-off victory with a sac fly to left field that scored Arbiter.

Theresa Cardello (7-2) pitched all 10 innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out four batters.

CMSV 9, SJC 3

In a hole early, SJC fell behind 6-0 after two innings and finally posted runs in the bottom of the fourth. Elise Grau's sac fly to left field would score Arbiter (2-for-4), and Scura (1-for-3) sent Magerovich and Ashley Steponaitis (1-for-4) home to cut the deficit to three (6-3).

Vincent's would post the final three runs in the top of the sixth--via a two-RBI single and an RBI double--to wrap the afternoon's scoring as SJC failed to make any further dent into the Dolphins' lead.

Lauren Buturla (3-6) allowed five earned runs in one inning and took the loss for SJC. Ashley Blydenburgh (4.2 innings) and Nicole Baron (1.1 innings) provided relief efforts.

The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, April 14 when they head up to Albany, NY to face Skyline rival Sage in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm. Live stats for both games will be available here.
