Softball and Sage Play to Split

Albany, NY| After a 4-2, extra-inning victory in game one, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to The Sage Colleges in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

The split sees the Golden Eagles move to 14-12 (10-2 Skyline) and the Gators to 13-15 (8-4) on the year.

SJC 4, Sage 2 (8 innings)

St. Joseph's opened the scoring in the top of the first when Ashley Steponaitis (2-for-4) scored Kristen Arbiter (1-for-3) with an RBI single up the middle, and the Golden Eagles would maintain the one-run advantage until the bottom of the fourth when Sage's Kiersten Duncan fired the hosts into the lead with a two-run homer.

In the top of the sixth, Ashley Accardi's (1-for-1) pinch-hit RBI single to center scored Madeline Sganga to knot the score up at two, and in the top of the eighth Theresa Cardello's (1-for-4) two-run single knocked in the winnings runs as SJC earned the 4-2 victory.

Cardello (8-2) struck out seven batters in a complete-game effort and is now tied for the conference lead in victories.

Sage 3, SJC 1

Scoreless till the third, Sage grabbed the lead on a throwing error and a Jessica Adams (2-for-2) RBI single up the middle.

In the top for the fourth, Elise Grau (0-for-2) reached on a throwing error and enabled Arbiter (1-for-1) to score from third base to cut the SJC deficit to one (2-1).

Allison Ford's (0-for-3) ground out to second base scored Alexa Silk (2-for-3) as Sage restored its two-run lead (3-1) in the bottom of the fifth. St. Joseph's had no response in the final two innings and took the 3-1 defeat.

Nicole Baron (1-1) struck out two batters and allowed two earned runs in her second start of the season.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, April 19 when they host the Stevens Institute of Technology in a non-conference doubleheader at the SJC Softball Stadium. Live stats for both games will be available here.
