NYU Outshoots Lady Eagles by Wide Margin in 3-0 Decision

Riverdale, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (4-4-0) suffered their third straight shutout. 3-0,  at the hands of NYU (4-3-1) as the Violets slipped through the Eagles defense with ease on Tuesday night. The Lady Eagles could not find an answer against a potent NYU offense as they were outshot forty-two to five.

Once again, the Golden Eagles loss cannot be placed on the shoulders of goalkeeper Cristiana Votta (East Islip N.Y./East Islip). Votta has 36 saves in the last three games, including her sixteen stops against NYU. Votta saw twelve shots come her way in the first sixteen minutes before Melissa Menta scored on a breakaway.

Despite the twenty first half shots, St. Joseph's went into halftime only down 1-0. However, that would not last long as Amelia Hammerl headed home a cross from Melissa Menta just three minutes into the second half.

The Golden Eagles only real chance of the night came when Jennifer Martino (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) put a shot on goal that was followed up by another shot by Jessica Cordano (Oakdale N.Y./Connetquot). Both shots were denied by NYU goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg, her only two saves on the night. The Violets would add one more tally as Sophia Toohey notched the first goal of her career.

The Eagles will head to Purchase, N.Y., this Saturday, for their second Skyline Conference match of the season with the Purchase Panthers.
