Eagles Swamp Sage Gators, 3-0, for Big Skyline Win

Albany, N.Y. — The Lady Golden Eagles (8-4, 3-1 Skyline) lit it up on Sunday in their match against the Sage Gators (1-8, 0-4 Skyline), outscoring the home team 3-0 for their third Skyline Conference win.

The Eagle's were quick to take the offensive with two shots on goal within the first nine minutes of play, effectively rattling the Gators and setting the tone for the remainder of the match. At 8:42 Samantha Garcia (Central Islip, N.Y./ St. John the Baptist) put the first score up on the board for SJC with her unassisted tally, giving the visiting team an edge going into the second half.

When the Eagles stepped onto the field after the halftime break they seemed to be even more aggressive than they had been in the first 45 minutes of the match, succeeding in their efforts to keep the ball on the offensive end of the field and wear down the Gator defense.

At 56:16 Jennifer Martino (East Patchogue, N.Y./ Bellport) found the back of the net, assisted by the combined efforts of Garcia and Laura Heschl (Medford, N.Y./ St. John the Baptist), to put the Eagles up 2-0.  SJC was unrelenting in its efforts, as the Eagles continued to take shots on goal and test their opponent's breaking point.  With less than eight minutes left in the game, confusion in the box led to Sage scoring on itself, knocking the wind out of the already drowning Gators and cinching the victory for the Golden Eagles.

SJC keeper Cristiana Votta (East Islip, N.Y./ East Islip) had little action on her end thanks to her team's hustle, but did step in and save Sage's sole shot on goal with ease late in the second half.  As a team, St. Joseph's logged 14 shots.

The Eagles will host Sarah Lawrence on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. match.
