Patchogue, NY| Senior Fernando Vazquez tallied 18 points--including the 1,000th of his career--as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team surged to a 72-51 victory over Skyline Conference rival SUNY Maritime at home on Friday evening.

With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 5-11 on the year and 4-4 in conference play as the Privateers slide to 6-9 (2-5 Skyline).

Vazquez's team-leading 18 points came off 5-10 shooting from the field and was bested only by John Liccese's 19 points for Maritime.

Also scoring in double digits for the Golden Eagles was senior Andy Laurent (14 points) and junior Isaiah Moore (11 points).

Junior Mike Harris shot 3-3 from the field and collected seven points.

Laurent sank a three-ball 37 seconds into the contest to give SJC an early lead they would fail to relinquish for the entire game. Consecutive three-pointers from Vazquez and Harris would later put the Golden Eagles up 14-4 at 15:04 and paved the way for the hosts to take a 41-22 lead into the break.

It was more of the same in the second half as SJC opened up a 22-point lead (56-34) when junior Dan Brzozka drained a three-ball at 14:00. St. Joseph's would hold its widest margin-- 25 points (70-45)--with 3:18 to play in regulation following a converted free throw by Laurent but it would be a 21-point margin when the buzzer sounded for a 72-51 victory for SJC.

St. Joseph's would hold statistical advantages in virtually all categories including field goal percentage (45.3%-35.0%), rebounds (43-32) and bench points (19-8).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Monday, January 23 when they head to the Bronx to face Lehman College in a non-conference tilt at 7:00 PM. Live stream and stats available here.
