Old Westbury Holds Off Men’s Basketball on Saturday

Old Westbury, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team scored three players in double digits but were defeated, 72-65, by SUNY Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference contest inside the Clark Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 2-4 overall on the year and 1-2 in conference play. The Panthers improve to 2-1 overall (1-0 Skyline).

SJC was led by junior Frank Basile, who posted a game-high 27 points (10-for-25 FG) and a team-best 13 rebounds for his fourth-straight double-double.

Junior Brad Weiss notched the first double-double of his career with a 15-point, 11-rebound performance, and senior Mike Harris contributed 14 points.

Pedro Marquez and Alan McDonald powered the Panthers with 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Old Westbury pulled away late in the first half and eventually took a 34-20 lead into the break, but rallied in the second half and brought the game back to within four points (69-65) when Basile drained a three-pointer with 1:09 to play in regulation.

With 22 seconds to play, Marquez dashed SJC's comeback hopes when he responded with a three-ball of his own to put the Panthers up 72-65--the game's final score.

St. Joseph's ( 35.3 FG%) and Old Westbury (35.5 FG%)  were virtually even from the field but the hosts were superior from beyond the arc (36.0% to 25.9%).

SJC was the better team on the boards (52-49) and outscored the Panthers in the paint, 30-24.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, December 4 when they visit Yeshiva University for a Skyline Conference contest at 8:00 pm.
