Basile Posts Double-Double in Men’s Basketball’s Loss to Mt. St. Vincent

Patchogue, NY| Despite a double-double effort by junior Frank Basile, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team was defeated, 72-65, by the College of Mount St. Vincent inside the Danzi Center on Saturday afternoon.

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 5-16 on the year and 4-14 in Skyline Conference play as the Dolphins improve to 6-15 (5-11 Skyline).

Basile posted game-high totals for points (23) and rebounds (11) for his team-leading 10th double-double of the year.

Senior Mike Harris (5-for-11 FG) and freshman Matthew Lavin (4-for-7 FG) contributed 12 points apiece and junior Jonahy Caldwell (4-for-8 FG) went for eight points.

Junior Doug Niblock scored six points and junior Brad Weiss tallied four points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Dolphins were paced by David Collins, who scored 16 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field.

Mt. St. VIncent set the tone early and carried a 32-28 lead into halftime. It wasn't until 11:37 of the second half the SJC took its first lead when Lavin drained a three-ball to put the hosts up 47-46.

Over the next five minutes there were seven lead changes until Mt. St. Vincent took a 58-57 lead with 5:35 to play when Mamadou Mariko converted a layup in close. The guests would fend off the Golden Eagles from there and held on for a 72-65 victory.

In spite of being outshot 45.8% to 35.3% from the field, SJC was the better team from beyond the arc and held a 36.4% to 30.8% advantage. The hosts were also superior on the boards (42-41) and in the paint, where they outscored the Dolphins 10-9.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, February 6 when they visit Farmingdale State for a Skyline Conference contest at 8:00 pm.
