Men’s Lacrosse Holds Off SUNY Canton at Home on Sunday

Patchogue, NY| Behind a six-goal performance by junior Casey Hickey the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team earned a convincing 17-11 victory over SUNY Canton at Danzi Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 3-1 on the season as the Kangaroos slide to 3-0.

Hickey tallied six times on 17 shots and also dished out two assists. Midfielder Scott Reece scored four times and added to his team-high total of 16 goals.

SJC scored early and often and built a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest with tallies from Chris Neilsen and Hickey (2). After Canton halved the deficit (4-2) with 7:01 to play in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles rattled off four-straight goals to take an 8-2 lead into the second quarter.

Hickey went for two more tallies at 14:29 and 10:52 of the second before Reece made it a nine-goal lead (11-2) and paved the way for the hosts to take a 12-4 lead into the break.

After outscoring the Kangaroos 2-1 in the third quarter, SJC carried a nine-goal lead (14-5) into the fourth but conceded six of the next seven goals as Canton cut the deficit to four (15-11).

Goals from Reece and Hickey with 4:11 and 2:45 to play, respectively, ended the Kangaroos' streak and drove St. Joseph's to the 17-11 victory.

SJC outshot Canton by a massive 58-22 margin and also held advantages in ground balls (48-29) and faceoffs (24-8).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, March 17 when they host Stockton in a Skyline Conference contests at 7:00 pm from Danzi Stadium. Live stats will be available here.
