Men’s Soccer Holds Off Old Westbury on Senior Day

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team snapped a three-game skid with a 2-1 Senior Day victory over SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles improve to 4-8-1 overall and 3-6-1 in Skyline Conference play with the win as the Panthers drop to 2-11-1 and 0-9-1.

Old Westbury opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Ismael Ruiz put back a rebound opportunity with his head deep inside the SJC box.

St. Joseph's responded seven minutes later when Kyle Plate converted on a penalty. Justin Gracia won the penalty after he took a James Dacos pass in stride and was taken down in the Old Westbury box.

Dacos and Gracia combined in a nearly identical play four minutes later, but this time Gracia beat his man, cut in from the left, and curled an attempt around the Old Westbury keeper to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

SJC rode out a 2-1 win and limited the Panthers to nine shots while generating 22 of their own.

Tyler Flaherty--honored alongside fellow seniors Francesco Valenti, Joel Ulloa, and Plate in a pre-match ceremony--made three saves in the match.

The Golden Eagles wrap up their 2021 regular-season schedule with a Skyline contest vs. Yeshiva at Passidomo Veterans Memorial Park (W. Harrison, NY) on October 28 at 8:00 pm.
