Women’s Lacrosse’s Comeback Falls Short at Stockton

Written by Andrew Capitelli (SJC-LI Sports Information)

Galloway, NJ| Meaghan Haber scored three times—including the tying mark with 1:30 to play in regulation—as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's lacrosse team saw its comeback bid fall short in a 7-6 overtime defeat to Stockton University on the road on Thursday afternoon. With the defeat, the Golden Eagles fall to 1-2 on the season while Stockton improves to 5-0.

Stockton's Sky Mahoney-Kendra opened the scoring 1:02 into the contest, but Haber tallied her first goal of the season 27 seconds later to knot the score at one. Kristin Carroll would put the Golden Eagles in front with 23:41 to play in the half with her fourth goal of the season, although Stockton would carry the play over the next six minutes and used two scores to pull ahead 3-2 at 17:53.

Jenna Kelleher's fourth of the season at 6:58 tied the score at three, and Carroll's second of the afternoon restored the Golden Eagles' one-goal lead (4-3) five minutes later.

Reversing momentum, the Ospreys finished the half strong with two goals off the sticks of Mary Schmid and Kim Raichelson and carried a 5-4 advantage into the break.

Sarah Frankovic padded Stockton's lead (6-4) with a goal at 21:03 of the second, but Haber's second goal at 14:43 cut the deficit to one again (6-5).

After 13 minutes of scoreless action, Haber struck for the third time in the match, when she took a feed from Nicole Stoppelli and knotted the game up for the fifth time (6-6) with 1:30 to play in regulation.

With no winner in the closing moments, the sides headed to sudden-death overtime, where Stockton squashed the Golden Eagles' comeback hopes with a Brianna Rolke goal 3:43 into the extra frame.

Lindsay Ramos made six saves for St. Joseph's in the defeat and Stockton's Mary Stornes was credited with eight.

Haber and Frankovic both tallied a game-best three goals, while Stoppelli's two helpers were a game-high. Jessica Cordano and Heather Malosky led all participants with four ground balls apiece.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, March 19 when they travel to Hartwick for a non-conference showdown at 4:00 PM. Live stats will be available here.
