Eagles Volleyball Flies High With 4-0 Week

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team (10-3) ended the week with a perfect 4-0 record after earning victories against New Jersey City University (3-8) and Manhattanville (8-11) at the Skyline Tri-Match on Saturday. The women are on a five match winning streak and have won six of their last seven.

The Lady Eagles opened up the day with a victory over the Gothic Knights of NJCU in straight games (25-10, 25-17, 25-18). Freshman middle-hitter Heather Ferchland (Seldon, N.Y./Centereach) led all players with 11 kills in the match. Sophomore co-captain Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had a match high 23 assists and added 11 digs. Senior co-captain Ashley Larrea (Islip, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) gave a strong effort defensively with 13 digs and added two service aces.

In the second match, St. Joseph's faced a tougher matchup against the Valiants of Manhattanville, but went on the win in four games (25-18, 25-18, 19-25, 25-14). Leading the way was sophomore Melissa Garibaldi (Seaford, N.Y./ Island Trees) with 15 kills and five aces. Freshman Tiffany Willms (Centereach N.Y./Centereach) contributed 11 kills. Tierney had another strong performance with 38 assists and nine dig. Ash Larrea saw a lot of action in the back row, ending up with a match high 26 digs.

Next up for the Lady Eagles is a home match against conference opponent NYU-Polytechnic (4-17, Skyline 1-1) on October 3, at 7:00 p.m. NYU-Poly has won the last three Skyline Championships, but St. Joseph's is looking to show why they were chosen ahead of the Fighting Blue Jays in the preseason coaches' poll.
