Split Result for Volleyball in Skyline Quad Matches

Patchogue, N.Y. — The Lady Eagles (10-8, 2-1 SKY) certainly held their own on Saturday in the Skyline Quad match hosted at the Danzi Gymnasium, defeating the Purchase Panthers (4-7, 0-3 SKY) with apparent ease and bringing their rival Sage Gators (8-14, 3-0 SKY) into a five set match that unfortunately ended in defeat.

SJC took the first two sets of the match against Purchase skillfully and quickly with final scores of 25-17 and 25-11, respectively. The Panthers developed a sense of urgency late in the last set though and were seemingly unwilling to go down without a fight.  Despite the back and forth scoring up until the last kill, the Lady Eagles won the set 26-24 and subsequently won their first match of the day.

Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./ Centereach) dominated the floor with 12 kills and eight services aces and Tiffany Willms (Centereach, N.Y./ Centereach) was also a force to be reckoned with at the net with six kills. Junior captain Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./ Bethpage) came through with a solid 28 assists.

SJC's match against Sage was not as clear-cut, however, as neither of the well-matched teams were unwilling to accept defeat. The fifth set was a nail biter as the scoring was again back and forth, every play proving to be vital.  In the end, the Gators took the set 15-12 and with it, the match.

Despite the loss, the Lady Eagles certainly proved that they had game.Ferchland slammed down 11 kills while Willms and Melissa Garibaldi (Seaford, N.Y./ Island Trees) logged an impressive nine and ten kills respectively. Tierney came away with a whopping 41 assists.

The team will travel to Newburgh, N.J. on Saturday for a tri-match against Skyline Conference competitors, Mt. St. Vincent and Mt. St. Mary.
