Men’s Basketball Edged by Mt. St. Vincent on Tuesday

Riverdale, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team dropped an 82-72 decision at the College of Mount St. Vincent in a Skyline Conference contest on Tuesday evening.

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 5-16 on the year as the Dolphins improve to 8-14 overall and 5-8 in Skyline action.

SJC was paced by senior Frank Basile, who sank four three-pointers and tallied a game-high 22 points. The guard also pulled down six rebounds.

Senior Jonah Caldwell shot 6-for-7 from the field for 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Sophomore Michael Darby also went for a double-double of 12 points and a game-best 11 rebounds.

Sophomore Matthew Lavin tallied six points and a game-high six assists, and senior Doug Niblock went for eight points and four assists.

CMSV was powered by Makai Johnson, who matched Basile with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting.

St. Joseph's led by as many as five points (16-11) in the first half, but the hosts closed out the period strong and rode a 45-35 lead into the break.

In the second half, Basile's three-pointer with 6:22 to play brought SJC back to within six points (66-60) but the Dolphins managed to keep the guests at arm's length and held on for a 10-point victory.

St. Joseph's shot 39.4% from the floor and held a statistical edge in total assists (12-11) in the contest. SJC pulled down a total of 40 rebounds and scored 26 points in the paint.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, February 15 when they visit St. Joseph's College (Brkln) for a Skyline Conference contest at 3:00 pm.
