Women's Tennis Opens Up 2016 Season With 5-4 WIn Over William Paterson

 Wayne, NJ| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team began the 2016 on a strong note taking down William Paterson, 5-4, in a tightly contested match-up on Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles begin the year with a 1-0 record as the Pioneers drop to 0-1.

The tandem of Kerri McMahon and Emily Portal got the Golden Eagles started winning the first point of the match by defeating Brianna Boyd and Julienn Guzman 8-1. The Pioneers tied up the game as Brittany LaBruna and Kaworu Ishikawa took down Victoria Panicola and Alana Caporale, 8-2. The second double match featured Erika Hesselbirg and Nora Burnett who gave SJC the second doubles point of the contest with a 8-4 win.

William Paterson tied the match up 2-2, as Amanda Post dropped her set to LaBruna 0-6, 0-6. Panicola helped SJC recapture the lead by sweeping both her sets 6-0, 6-0. In her colligate single debut McMahon held the upper advantage over Jessica Papin-Yukhtanova winning her match 6-1, 6-0. Ishikawa pulled the Pioneers within one (4-3) with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Caporale at the #2 slot.

Nora Burnett claimed the fifth point for the victory in a hard fought battle winning the first set 6-0 and pulling out a 7-5 win in the second set. Hesselbirg dropped her match to Stephanie Doot in a tie-breaker 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), 4-10.

The Golden Eagles will commence conference play on Saturday Sept. 10 when they travel to Albany, NY as they take on the Sage Colleges at 1:00 PM.
