Portal Leads Women's Tennis in 5-4 Upset Over Yeshiva On Wednesday

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team earned a hard fought 5-4 victory over Skyline Conference rival Yeshiva University on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Eagles improve to 6-2 on the year and 4-1 in conference play, as the Maccabees were handed their first loss of the year finishing up their season 9-1 (6-1 Skyline).

The tandem of Amanda Post and Victoria Panicola got the Golden Eagles started winning the first point of the match by defeating Shani Hava and Rebbecca Packer, 8-3. The second double match featured Kerri McMahon and Emily Portal who doubled SJC's lead 2-0 winning their match 8-0 over Jenny Tepler and Tzipora Leiser. Yeshiva cut its deficit by one (2-1) when Adele Lerner and Lindsay Frucher pushed past Erika Hesselbrig and Nora Burnett 9-7.

Yeshiva tied the match up 2-2, as Amanda Post dropped her set to Hava 6-2, 6-0. McMahon continued her unbeaten streak at number three singles winning both sets 6-0, 6-2 to push the Golden Eagles ahead 3-2. Panicola helped SJC gain a two-point advantage (4-2) outlasting Leiser 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Hesselbrig took her match to the third set but could not seal the fifth point as she dropped her set 6-1, 0-6, 2-6 at fourth singles. Yeshiva would then rally back to tie the game 4-4 as Tepler forced a third set against Burnett winning her set 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Emily Portal claimed the fifth point for the victory in a hard fought battle after dropping the first set 6-3, she came back to defeat Frucher 6-2, 6-3 to upset set Yeshiva 5-4.  


The Golden Eagles will host NJAC opponent Rutgers-Newark on Saturday October 1 at the Outdoor Field Complex in Patchogue, NY at 12:00 PM.
