Arquer Gets All-Conference, Five Records Fall at NJAC Championships

Staten Island, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's and women's track teams both competed at the NJAC Championships on Monday night at the Ocean Breeze Park Track and Field Athletic Complex.

Overall, the women's team finished seven out of nine teams with 28 points and the men scored 11 points to finish ninth out of nine schools.

Ashley Arquer was the stand-out for the women's side, breaking three school records and earning two ECAC qualifications. Arquer broke the program's 60-meter record (8.04) with a fourth-place qualification in the prelims. The sprinter would eventually claim second-place in the finals with a 8.06 finish and was named to the NJAC All-Conference Second-Team. Arquer also broke her 200-meter record crossing the line with 27.27 mark. 

Jessica Pierno placed eighth in the Long Jump leaping a distance of 4.88 meters and broke Kathleen Baker's nine-year record in the shot put event with a distance of 10.13 meters.

Alexa Levin finished in eighth in the weight throw hurling a distance of 11.03 meters. Levin was the program's first thrower to score points at the NJAC championships.

Gabrielle Mason also had a record-breaking performance, pole vaulting a career-high 2.91 meters.

The team of Amanda Sprague, Jennifer Holownia, Arquer and Pierno broke their previous 4x200 meter relay with a 1:49.86 time, earning them a fourth place finish and an ECAC Championship qualification.

The team of Kelly Roberts, Taylor Darby, Samantha Maurice, and Cassandra Costarelli placed third in the distance medley relay, earning them Honorable Mention accolades. Their time of 13:36.93 set a new SJC record.

For the men, Brian Frejka , Mike O'Shea, Daniel Antonawich, and Brian Merle earned a seventh-place finish (1:38.01) in the 4x200-meter, while the 4x400-meter relay group of Frejka, O'Shea, Antonawich and Nick Russo clocked in at 3:36.80. 

John Suchopar, Tim Elgort, Nick Diaz, and Ryan Haun came in fourth place in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:47.23.

The distance medley relay team of Diaz, O'Shea, Elgort, and Suchopar came in seventh with a 11:35.68 time.

Spraque, Holownia, and Pierno will join Arquer at the ECAC Championships on March 4. The event will take place at Ocean Breeze Park Track and Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island.
