Women's Lacrosse Falls to Western Connecticut in Season Opener

Danbury, CT| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season with a 16-5 non-conference loss at Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday evening.

Junior Melissa Newman recorded two goals with junior Jamie Trowbridge and freshmen Deirdre Carney and Emily O'Mara all scoring for the Golden Eagles.

O'Mara finished with a team-best four draw controls with Carney grabbing three. On the defensive end, junior Sydney Furno scooped up two ground balls while causing two turnovers.

Western Connecticut's Vicky Gracy netted a game-best seven goals and seven draw controls with Dominique DeMarsico contributing four goals and two assists.

The Colonials opened the game with eight unanswered goals before SJC's Trowbridge broke up the scoring drought with a free position goal late in the second quarter. WCSU's Colleen Crotty connected with DeMarsico for the final goal of the second quarter and the Colonials went into the break leading 9-1.

The Golden Eagles went on to find the back of the net four times in the second half, but Western Connecticut went on to cruise to the 16-5 win.

The Colonials outshot SJC 39-8 and held an 18-4 ground ball advantage.

SJC's senior goalie Jillian Hummel finished the night with 11 saves and freshman Chloe Anthony recorded six saves in her collegiate debut. WCSU's Anna Schipf made two saves to record her second win of the season.

The Golden Eagles host DeSales University for their home-opener on Wednesday, March 9 at 6:00 pm.
