Women's Lacrosse Edged by Maritime in Skyline Opener

Throggs Neck, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's lacrosse team fell just short in an 8-7 contest with SUNY Maritime to open up Skyline Conference action on Friday evening.

The Golden Eagles move to 1-4 on the season, 0-1 in Skyline play. The Privateers remain unbeaten with an 8-0 overall record, 2-0 Skyline.

Junior Jamie Trowbridge finished with a team-best three goals and four ground balls. Emily O'Mara recorded two goals and an assist and collected a game-best six draw controls.

Maritime was led by a three-goal performance by Sara Wright who also finished with four ground balls and three draw controls. Jenna Lesiewicz recorded two goals, an assist, five draw controls, and four ground balls.

The Privateers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter before SJC's Melissa Newman converted her free position attempt in the final second of the frame.

The Golden Eagles closed the gap with goals from O'Mara and Trowbridge and went into the break trailing by just one, 4-3.

Both sides found the back of the net three times in the third quarter sending the teams into the fourth at 6-7. Maritime scored first in the final frame giving the hosts some breathing room, but SJC's Hannah King scored an unassisted tally at the 3:26 mark to bring the Golden Eagles back to within one, but SJC was unable to get another shot off before time ran out.

St. Joseph's goalie Jillian Hummel finished with a career-best 20 saves on the night with Maritime's Liz Pomaro recording two.

The Golden Eagles return to Danzi Stadium on Tuesday, March 5 when they host Farmingdale College at 6:00 pm.
