Women's Lacrosse Falls in Skyline First Round

Purchase, NY| The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end with a 16-9 loss at Manhattanville College in the Skyline Conference first round on Tuesday evening.

 SJLI was led by a five-point performance by sophomore Emily O'Mara who recorded four goals and an assist. Junior Melissa Newman pitched in with three goals with sophomore Hannah King rounded out the scoring with two goals.

M'Ville was by Lara Keenan who finished with six points on five goals and an assist. Kerry Carr recorded four goals and an assist with Marissa D'Angelo adding three goals and an assist.

The first half was controlled by the Valiants closing out the first frame and opening the second quarter on a 5-0 run and taking a 7-1 advantage. The Golden Eagles went on to score three unanswered goals closing the gap to three, 7-4 with just over five minutes left in the half. M'Ville went on to score two more times and took a 9-4 lead into the break.

The Valiants continued to pour on the offense in the third quarter outscoring the Golden Eagles 4-1 to take a 13-5 lead into the final frame. Manhattanville led by as many as nine on a couple of occasions in the fourth quarter, but the Golden Eagles held off the running clock with goals from O'Mara and King early in the frame before Newman and King found the back of the net in the final minutes to move the score to its final, 16-9.

The Valiants outshot the Golden Eagles 34-26 and held a slight 16-14 edge in ground balls.

SJLI goalie Jillian Hummel finished her night with seven saves as M'Ville's Britney Sirota recorded nine.

The Golden Eagles wrap up the season with an overall record of 4-8 as the Valiants advance to the semifinals at 6-8.
