Women's Soccer Shut Out in Season Opener

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College women's soccer team dropped its season-opening contest 3-0 to New York University Friday evening. The Violets start its season at 1-0 and the Golden Eagles slide to 0-1.

NYU's Ashlyn Krygowski connected with a pass from Maddie Pena in the tenth minute to take an early 1-0 advantage. SJC's best scoring opportunity of the game came in the 21st minute when a through ball from junior Christina Gagliardi found junior Claire Brady who's shot was just wide of the net. Despite being outshot 17-1 in the half, goalkeeper Juliana Cintron-Leonardo made six saves to hold the Violets to just a one-goal lead.

Two goals from NYU's Pena early in the second half saw the Violets extend its lead. The first came in the 54th minute when she buried a pass from Sophia Foster-Palmer. Less than two minutes later, Alex Benedict sent a corner kick into the box for Pena who's header found the back of the net moving the score to its final 3-0.

NYU outshot the Golden Eagles 33-3 with an 8-0-corner kick advantage. Cintron-Leonardo finished with ten saves and her counterpart Sophia Danielsen earned the shutout with one save.

The Golden Eagles travel to face Lycoming College at the Penn College Invitational on Saturday, September 8. Kick off is slated for 1:00 pm.
