W. Tennis Flies Past York, 9-0

Patchogue, N.Y. - It was another dominating performance by the Golden Eagles' women's tennis team (2-0) yesterday as they won 9-0 over the York College (NY) Cardinals (0-1).

Once again, the doubles matches were a walk in the park for the Golden Eagles as each group finished with a score of 8-0.  The duos of freshman Shannon Merker (Flanders, N.Y./McGann-Mercy) and junior Kelley McGrath (Nesconset, N.Y. / Sachem North), sophomore Rita Wehrli (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and sophomore Erika Hasselberg (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd), and freshman Kerri Cetin (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and senior Lindsey Merker (Flanders, N.Y./McGann-Mercy) all bumped up their game on an emotional day.  This marks the second consecutive contest that the Golden Eagles were able to sweep their doubles matches.

As for the singles matches, the women's team was relentless in pursuit of perfection.  In the first set of the first singles match, a York College representative was able to register some kind of offense.  In the 11 remaining sets, the Cardinals were shut down by the fierce offense of the Golden Eagles.

Shannon Merker, Rita Werli, and Erika Hassselberg each registered their 2nd singles victory. Kelley McGrath improves to 1-1, while Kerri Cetin and Lindsey Merker each even up their singles records to 1-1 for the season.

The tennis team looks to open up the season with three consecutive wins at home.  The match will be held this Sunday at 1:00 p.m., against Pratt Institute.
