Tennis Drops Match to Farmingdale, Rebounds Against Purchase

Patchogue, N.Y.—This weekend was a busy one for the Golden Eagles women's tennis team (8-3, SKY 5-1) with matches against two Skyline Conference teams, Farmingdale State (11-1, SKY 5-0) and Purchase State (2-6, SKY 1-4). Unfortunately, a disheartening 9-0 fall to the Farmingdale Rams on Friday marked the team's first conference loss of the season, but the Eagles recovered quickly with a 5-4 victory over Purchase the following day.

While no one was able to achieve a win in their match against Farmingdale, Kerri Cetin (Centereach, N.Y./ Centereach) put up a valiant fight in the first set of her singles game, which ultimately ended 7-5, 6-0.

The match against Purchase provided many more opportunities for the Eagles to shine as doubles partners Kelley McGrath (Nesconset, N.Y./ Sachem North) and Shannon Merker (Flanders, N.Y./ McGann-Mercy) as well as partners Lindsey Merker (Flanders, N.Y./ McGann-Mercy) and Rita Wehrli (Medford, N.Y./ Patchogue-Medford) both dominated their opponents with a score of 8-6. Kelley McGrath (7-5,6-3), Shannon Merker (6-4, 6-4) and Rita Wherli (6-3, 6-0) were also victorious independently, their efforts directly contributing to the team's 5-4 win.

The Golden Eagles will host a Skyline Conference Tournament semifinal match on Wednesday against Yeshiva at 5:00 p.m.
