Mansfield, CT| Despite taking an early first-half lead, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, at Eastern Conn. State on Tuesday evening.
The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 2-5 on the year as the Warriors improve to 5-1.
Senior Shayne Johnson opened the scoring in the 11th minute when he pulled down keeper Tyler Flaherty's long ball and fired a 35-yard bomb from the right side (1-0).
Three minutes from the break the Warriors found an equalizer (1-1) when Lucas Chaude finished off a left-side cross in the box.
Eastern found the game-winner 15 minutes after halftime when Griffin Luczek slotted home an attempt from in close (2-1). Justin Jensen's right-sided cross found Jake Pendl in the box, and Pendl fed Luczek for the winner.
Flaherty (2-5) made eight saves for the Golden Eagles in a match that saw his side outshot 20-12. Eastern keepers Kyle Boutot (1-0) and Ryan Murphy split time and made a combined three saves.
The Warriors held a 12-4 edge in corners won.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, September 22 when they host SUNY Maritime for a Skyline Conference contest at 12:00 pm.
