Men’s Soccer Surges to 5-1 Win over Mt. St. Vincent

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team scored five unanswered second-half goals and erased a one-goal deficit in a 5-1 home victory over the College of Mount St. Vincent on Wednesday evening.

The win sees the Golden Eagles improve to 4-5 on the year and 2-1 in Skyline Conference play as the Dolphins slip to 1-7 (0-2 Skyline).

Despite outshooting Mt. St. Vincent 14-4 in the first half, SJC entered the break in a 0-0 stalemate with the guests. The tiebreaker would come less than two minutes into the second half, but it was the Dolphins that went ahead against the run of play when Derick Cordova scored from the left for his fifth goal of the season (1-0).

Less than five minutes later, in the 50th minute, SJC leveled via senior Shayne Johnson, who snuck behind the Mt. St. Vincent defense and buried a punt from sophomore keeper Tyler Flaherty (1-1).

Senior Justin Busto put the hosts ahead in 54th minute when he converted in the box following a broken play (2-1), and sophomore Alex Tarach doubled the SJC advantage five minutes later with a bomb from nearly 50 yards out (3-1).

Junior Damian Duda tallied his fourth goal of the season in the 66th minute with a short sided shot from the left (4-1) and junior Rayneri Ruiz wrapped the scoring with his seventh goal of the year when he beat the keeper on the left side from the top of the box in the 67th minute (5-1).

Flaherty was forced into making just three saves on the evening while his counterpart, Padelis Astrinidis, was credited with 13.

In total, SJC outshot Mt. St. Vincent 39-7 in the contest and won nine corners to the Dolphins' one.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, September 29 when they host the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a Skyline Conference contest at 12:00 pm.
