Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Old Westbury In Conference Showdown

Patchogue, NY| Behind a five goal and three assist performance from Brooke Kreuscher, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's lacrosse team defeated Old Westbury, 19-15, in a Skyline Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Danzi Stadium.

With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 3-8 (2-1 Skyline) on the year while the Panthers fall to 1-7 (1-1 Skyline).

Nicole Stoppelli tallied the game's first goal at 28:26 as the Golden Eagles rallied for five-straight marks over the next 10 minutes as Diana Johnston (2), Stoppelli, and Kreuscher found the back of the net.

OW's Natasha Treuman ended SJC's run at 18:19 and led the Panthers to a 5-0 run scoring two additional goals in eight minutes to tie the game (5-5) with 10:29 left in the half.

Stoppelli tallied her fourth hat trick of the season with 9:15 to play to give SJC its second lead of the afternoon (6-5). Kreuscher gave SJC a two-goal off a feed from Stoppelli's stick and rifled it into the back of the cage for her 23rd goal of the season.

The Panthers answered back with a goal of their own with 5:39 remaining in the first before Lauryn Gregson fired a goal less than 30 seconds later to regain a two-goal advantage over the Panthers, 8-6. Carroll and Kreuscher tallied back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the half to enter the break with a 10-6 lead.

Emily Fey opened the second half with a goal off the sticks of Carroll at the 28:28 mark. The Golden Eagles continued to tack on goals from Johnston (27:01), Stoppelli (26:49), and Kreuscher (25:11) to take a commanding eight-point lead (14-6).

Back-to-back goals from Johnston and Kreuscher at the 23rd and 22nd minutes increased the hosts' lead by nine (16-7).

With 21:02 remaining, Old Westbury took advantage of its man-up opportunity and tacked on two more goals to close its deficit 16-10 with 19:23 left to play. OW brought the game within five (16-11)  with 12:31 remaining courtesy of a Halle Johnson goal.
 
Bey and Johnson tallied consecutive goals at the nine and eight minute mark to close Old Westbury's deficit to three (16-13).

The Golden Eagles extended their lead back to six (19-13) after a goal by Fey, and back-to-back goals by Carroll with 5:30 left to play.

Bey would tally the contest's final goals with under a minute to play, but it wasn't enough as SJC earned 19-15 win over the Panthers.

Aside from Kreuscher's eight points (5g, 3a), Johnston added four goals and one assists while Stoppelli tallied four goals and two assists in the contest. Carroll finish the day with six points contributing with three goals and three assists.

Lindsay Ramos earned the win tallying 10 saves and allowed 15 goals.

The Golden Eagles continue conference play when they travel to Newburgh, NY to take on Mount St. Mary on Saturday, April 8 at 3:00 PM.  Live stats will be available here.
