Patchogue, NY| After squeezing out a 25-23 win in set one, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of FDU-Florham inside Danzi Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the defeat the Golden Eagles fall to 1-3 on the season as the Devils improve to 4-2.
After falling behind 13-6 in set one, SJC rallied for five of the next six points to cut the FDU deficit to three points (14-11) midway through the frame. The Devils would then open up a 20-15 lead before the Golden Eagles responded with a 6-0 run, capped off by a Courtney Bocchieri kill, to take a 21-20 lead. SJC would then open up a 24-21 advantage before surrendering two consecutive points, but Kiersten Kissinger registered a kill with the next point to clinch the first-set victory for the hosts.
FDU stormed out to an insurmountable lead in set two and cruised to the 25-13 win, but set three was much tighter and saw the Golden Eagles in control late (20-19). The Devils would rally for three straight points, and though kills from Claire Urizzo and Bocchieri delayed the Devils, FDU took the frame 25-22.
Down 16-13 in the fourth, SJC remained within striking distance, but a crippling 5-0 run opened up a 21-13 lead for the guests, who went on to claim the fourth and deciding set by the score of 25-15.
SJC's Bocchieri's 15 kills, which matched a career-high, were bested only by FDU's Lauren Harris, who collected 16. Urizzo pitched in with a season-best nine kills, while Kissinger contributed eight. Courtney Wickline dished out 27 assists and Danielle Senecal had a team-best 13 digs.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, September 13 when they travel to Manhattan to take on Hunter College in a non-conference tilt at 6:00 PM. Live stats can be found here.
