SJC Lady Eagles Sweep Old Westbury Panthers to Improve Skyline Record

Patchogue, N.Y. – The Eagles' (8-5, 3-1 Skyline) offense produced 22 runs against Old Westbury (1-4, 1-3 Skyline) over the two games that needed just five innings each to decide a winner.  St. Joseph's shutout the Panthers  11-0 in the first game, before outscoring the Panthers, 11-3, in game two.

In game one, the Lady Eagles got off to a quick start capitalizing on miscues and putting three runs on the board in the first. With two runners on and two outs, Megan Leun (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) did just as she did the day before, coming up with a two-out, two RBI hit to extend the lead.  The Eagles got two on with one out in the third and Samantha Carcano (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) drove home a run and stole second with Nicole Pitta (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) at the plate.  Pitta singled to centerfield driving home both runs, extending the Eagles lead to eight. Casey Thomas (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) drove in a run in the bottom of the fourth and Carcano brought home two more on an RBI single to cap off the Eagles 11-0 victory.

Cassie Martinez (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) was brilliant in five innings pitched, giving up just one hit while striking out five. Carcano went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI's and three runs scored. Pitta finished 2-4 with 2 RBI's and Leun was 2-3 with 2 RBI's.

The second game didn't go quite as smoothly for the Golden Eagles as they scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the second but Old Westbury got three back in the third cutting the lead to one. The Eagles coasted the rest of the way as Melanie Boccio (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) homered in the third and Martinez drove in two runs with an RBI single in the fourth. The Eagles led 7-3 going into the fifth when they put four runs on the board to end the game on the eight-run rule.

Mallory McClafferty (Bellport, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) pitched three innings giving up six hits and three runs while striking out four. She was relieved by Martinez who pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts. Cheyenne Raimondi (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) went 2-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Martinez helped her own cause with two hits in two at-bats and 3 RBI's. Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) went 2-4 with 2 RBI's.

The Eagles play a doubleheader at New Jersey City this Wednesday.
