Golden Eagles Fall to CSI in Season Opener

Written by Joshua Soto (SJC-LI Sports Information)

Staten Island, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team dropped its first match of the season, 87-50, in a non-conference matchup against the College of Staten Island (1-0) on Saturday afternoon at the CSI Sports and Rec center.

The Dolphins pulled ahead 8-7 before later starting to run away with the lead late in the first quarter, as the Golden Eagle found themselves trailing 15-9 with three minutes to play. Jackie Zizzo and Rynese Smith both scored a combined six points to close out the first trailing 23-15.

The Golden Eagles had to play catch-up early in the second quarter, as CSI sparked a 18-6 run to increase its lead to 41-21 with five minutes left. Without an answer SJC entered halftime down 56-32.

Like the second period, the Dolphins came out of the gates hot, building a 17-5. The Golden Eagles were held to five points in the third and concluded the third with a 36 point deficit, trailing 73-37.

CSI and the Golden Eagles would exchange buckets through the fourth quarter, as SJC attempted to cut the deficit. St. Joseph's would cap off the game with a 7-4 run, but inevitably dropped its season opener 87-50

Iavarone was the standout player for the Golden Eagles, notching a double-double with a game high in rebounds (13) and points (24). Zizzo added eight points and four rebounds.

The women's basketball team is next in action on Tuesday, November 17 when they travel to take Medgar Evers. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
