Bears Defeat Women's Basketball, 70-65, in First-Ever Skyline Meeting

Patchogue, NY| Three players scored in double figures as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team dropped its first conference game of the season, 70-65, against St. Joseph's College (Brkln) on Tuesday night at the Danzi Center. With the loss, the Golden Eagles slide to 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in the Skyline Conference, while the Bears sit at 1-8 (1-2 Skyline) on the year.

SJC-LI started the first quarter with a 12-3 run in the opening minutes, but the Bears responded with a 12-3 run of their own to tie the game 15-15 with a minute left in the quarter. The two sides then exchanged three pointers before SJC-Brooklyn capped off the frame with a buzz-beater three head into the second quarter 21-18.

The Bears held the lead late into the second quarter, but SJC-LI did not trail by more than four points. Jackie Zizzo made a layup at the 3:31 mark to retake the lead 30-29, but Kellie O'Neil retook the lead, 31-30, as St. Joseph's College (Brkln) entered halftime up 36-34.

The Bears continued to control the game and built their largest lead of the night, 52-44, following an Erica Eddie three-pointer. The Golden Eagles made a run to close the deficit to two, 52-50, with 1:36 in the quarter and wrapped the half down 54-52.

Andrea Iavarone helped the Golden Eagles take the lead, 63-60, scoring six points under a minute at 3:48. The Bears would make a comeback as Victoria Porcasi made all three free throws to tie the game 65-65 with 1:36 to play. From there, the Bears would close out the game, 70-65, with a 5-0 run handing SJC-LI its first Skyline loss of the season.

Andrea Iavarone finished with a game-high of 26 points, shooting 56% from the field, and grabbing 13 rebounds en route to her sixth double-double of the season. Zizzo added 15 points along with four rebounds. Asia Rountree had 11 points, seven rebounds and a game-high of three steals.

The Golden Eagles will play host to Purchase College on Saturday, December 12 at the Danzi Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
