Women's Basketball Falls To Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 68-50

New York, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team suffered a 68-50 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Hunter College Tournament Tip-off. The Golden Eagles now fall to 1-2 on the year as CMS improves to 2-0.

Sophomore forward Andrea Iavarone scored a game-high of 24 points on the road and recorded 10 rebounds en route to her third straight double-double of the season. Senior Rynese Smith had eight points; seven of the points were scored in the first half.

In a tightly contested battle between the two teams early in the first quarter, the Athenas started to pull away with a 7-14 with five minutes to play. Iavarone brought the team within three, 14-11, closing out the quarter with a layup and two free throws.

CMS started out the quarter with a 15-4 run, as the Golden Eagles found themselves trailing 29-15 with five minutes left in the half. SJC started clawing its way back into the game as it closed out the half with a 6-0, as they still trailed 31-20.

The two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of action, as the Golden Eagles were still trailing by ten in the fifth minute. The Athenas then pulled away with the lead once more as they closed the quarter with a 12-3 run, leading 51-35.

Iavrone still had the hot hand in the final quarter scoring five points in the opening minutes. CMS still continued its offensive pursuit as it took a 25 point lead with two minutes to play. The Golden Eagles would close out the game with a 7-2 run, as CMS took the 68-50 lead.

The Golden Eagles will play in the final round of the Hunter College Tip-Off Tournament, and they will take on the loser of the Centenary College (N.J.) / Hunter College game. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 PM.
