Women’s Soccer Falls to Hartwick in Mayor’s Cup Finale

Written by Joshua Soto (SJC-LI Sports Information)

Oneonta, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team were forced to wait at least a game longer for their first victory of 2016, as they suffered a 3-0 loss to Hartwick College on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Mayor's Cup. The Golden Eagles now fall to 0-3 on the year, while Hartwick improves to 4-1.

The Hawks came out strong generating two shots before breaking through for the game's first goal in the 8th minute. Sierra Bentley played a ball into the box from Allie Ricci, as Bentley shot it into the bottom right corner. The Hawks doubled their lead in the 18th minute when Rachel Weir outpaced the Golden Eagles' backline to record her first goal of the contest.  The Golden Eagles were able to withstand the Hawks aggressive offense until the final minute where Alyssa Bennett sent a ball up the middle for Ashley Connolly who was able scored with a one-touch finish to conclude the first half 3-0.
The Golden Eagles were outshot by the Hawks in the second half, this time 10-1, as the Hawks remained dangerous, forcing Juliana Cintron-Leonardo to make five saves in her first collegiate appearance at goal.

Rebecca Voisich had a strong showing in midfield and did well to control the pace of the game. Defenders Katie Condron and Shannon Condron did well to shore up the backline and stifle the Hartwick attackers in the second half. Both Condron's were named to the All-Tournament Team for their defensive efforts on the pitch.

St. Joseph's will return home to Long Island on Wednesday, September 14, when Stockton University arrives in Patchogue. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM at the Outdoor Field Complex.
