Women's Tennis Opens Up 2017 Season With 8-1 Win Over William Paterson

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team began the 2017 season  on a strong note taking down William Paterson, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles begin the year with a 1-0 record as the Pioneers drop to 0-1.

The tandem of Amanda Post and Victoria Panicola got the Golden Eagles started winning the first point of the match by defeating Carla Ishikawa and Arrion Berry 8-0. The Golden Eagles doubled up the score as Nora Burnett and Caroline Rina Mandora upended Briya Smallwood and Evelin Calle, 8-0. The team of Alana Caporale and Lindsey Charrier earned the doubles sweep in the second court taking down Michele Boyle and Julienn Guzman, 8-4.

In her SJC debut, freshman Erin Hickey helped the Golden Eagles inch closer to victory blanking Calle in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Suffolk CC transfer Mandora claimed the fifth point for the victory in sweeping a pair of sets 6-0, 6-0, to give SJC its first victory of the season.

Panicola, on second court, got the best of Boyle defeating her 6-0, 6-0, as Caporale (6-2, 6-4) and Burnett (6-4, 6-2) won their matches on the third and fourth court, respectively.

Post was handed her first defeat in the early season taking her opponent into a tie breaker before dropping her match 7-6 (5-7), 6-4.

The Golden Eagles will commence conference play on Sunday Sept. 10 when they travel to take  on Yeshiva University in a rematch of the Skyline Conference Championship Semifinal at 2:00 PM.
