Eagles Soar Past Royals in Opening Round

Scranton, Pa. – The St. Joseph's College men's basketball team (2-7) defeated the Royals of Scranton University (6-3), 69-57, to earn their second victory of the season.

Sophomore guard Evan Mohammed (Bayside, N.Y. / Holy Cross) led all scorers with 21 points. Forward Keith Anderson (Central Islip, N.Y. / North Babylon) and guard Sean McCarthy (Kings Park, N.Y. / Kings Park) each recorded a double-double. Anderson scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds; McCarthy scored 12 points and pulled in 11 boards.

The Eagles cruised in the first half behind 14 points from Mohammed. The men shot 46.4% from the floor and 45.5% from three-point land. Their defense was equally as strong, holding the Royals to 9-of-30 scoring from the floor and forced 10 turnovers. The Eagles went into the locker room with a lofty lead of 38-25 at the half.

In the second half, the Eagles' scoring went cold, shooting just 30% from the floor. The Royals couldn't mount a comeback because of the strong perimeter defense from St. Joseph's. The Royals shot just 20.8% from three-point land for the game.

The next game for the men is tomorrow against Alvernia University (5-2) in the finals of the Scranton Tournament.
