Brooklyn, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (5-11, 3-6 Skyline) men's basketball team bounced back from a recent rout with a big win over NYU-Polytechnic (4-10, 1-7 Skyline), 87-79, Tuesday night. Sophomore guard Evan Mohammed (Bayside, N.Y. / Holy Cross) tied the St. Joseph's program record with 10 three-pointers in the game. Chris Jimenez previously set the record on December 8, 2010 against Old Westbury.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early ten-point lead with 15:39 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Mohammed. The Eagles cruised during the rest of the half and held a lead by as much as 15. Four players scored double-digit points in the first half alone; Keith Anderson (Central Islip, N.Y. / North Babylon) had 14, Mohammed 15, Brady Colucci (Port Jefferson, N.Y. / Port Jefferson), and Phil Calixte (Amityville, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) each scored 10. St. Joseph's as a team shot an impressive 54.3% from the field and a lights out 10-of-19 from three-point land on their way to a 52-39 lead going into the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the Eagles continued rolling. An 8-2 run, capped by another Mohammed three-pointer, gave St. Joseph's a 20-point lead, the largest of the game. However the Blue Jays kept fighting and went on a run of their own. Over a four minute span, NYU-Poly outscored SJC 11-2 to cut the lead to 67-64. But, St. Joseph's three-point attack was just too much for the Blue Jays as they pulled ahead from that point on. The Eagles hit critical free-throws down the stretch and cemented the 87-79 victory.
Evan Mohammed led all scorers with 32 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor. Keith Anderson finished with a double-double (19 points, 12 rebounds). Phil Calixte dished out eight assists to go along with his 15 points.
Next up for the team is a critical matchup tomorrow night at Mount Saint Mary (10-6, 7-3 Skyline). The Knights currently sit in third place in the Skyline and the Golden Eagles need a win to keep pace and make the Skyline Conference Tournament. Earlier in the season Mount Saint Mary defeated St. Joseph's, 81-58.
