Men's Hoops Trounces Mt. St. Vincent on Senior Day

Patchogue, N.Y. - St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (15-8, 112-4 Skyline) out-splashed the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (16-7, 12-4 Skyline), overpowering the visitors convincingly, 92-58, on "senior day" Saturday afternoon.  The two teams are now tied for second place and a half-game back behind Sage.

In the final home regular season game of their career, seniors Sean McCarthy (Kings Point, N.Y./ Kings Point), Nick Gallina (Lake Grove, N.Y./ Sachem North), Darryl Charles (Middletown, N.Y./ Poughkeepsie), Brady Colucci (Port Jefferson, N.Y./ Port Jefferson), and Evan Mohammed (Bayside, N.Y./ Holy Cross) all contributed to the victory.

McCarthy posted a 20-point game with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Gallina led the Golden Eagles in dishes tallying six assists and adding five boards.  Charles was a power on the glass, collecting five boards. Brady scored 11 points off 4-for-5 shooting.

Action-packed play was the theme from the tip-off as Andy Laurent (Amityville, N.Y./ Amityville), Sean McCarthy and Isaiah Moore (North Babylon/North Babylon, N.Y.) all landed three -pointers to start the game with a momentum building 9-0 lead.

Moore followed up with two more exciting plays as he swished on a baseline jumper and then added another three-pointer to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 14.

At 13:22, Gallina found the open-cutter in McCarthy who finished with a lay-up under the basket and SJC up 17-2.

The Dolphins then countered the Golden Eagles' explosiveness by going on a 9-1 run of their own.

Moore protected the basket by stuffing two Mount Saint Vincent attackers, which transitioned to another McCarthy triple.

The Golden Eagles where electric from beyond the arc as three-balls landed from McCarthy, Laurent, and Fernando Vazquez (Babylon, N.Y. / Babylon) to build their largest lead of the half at 19 points.

St. Joseph's held the ball for the final play of the first period, moving the ball around efficiently to find the open-shooter, Vazquez, who knocked down a three to end the half 43-25.

The home team shot 10-for-17 from three-point range through the first 20 minutes of the tilt.

Laurent picked up from where he left off in the first half, coming out of intermission knocking down a three and then forging a path in the lane for another bucket.

The shots continually dropped for the Golden Eagles, as the home team ventured on a 39-13 scoring extravaganza to bust the contest wide-open. 

SJC's dominant victory can be attributed to strong shooting, as they hit 16-for-32 from three-point range and 32-for-60 on field goals.

St. Joseph's supplemented their offense with sound defense by outrebounding Mount Saint Vincent, 45-28.  

Laurent (18), Vazquez (12) and Moore (11) all found the bottom of the bucket on many occasions, together totaling 41 points. Laurent acquired four boards and four assists; Vazquez neared a double-double by corralling nine rebounds, and Moore had three blocked shots.

The postseason bound squad now moves on to their final two regular season matchups of the season against Farmingdale State, and then, Old Westbury. The Golden Eagles will battle the Rams in Farmingdale, N.Y. next Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
