Men’s Soccer Falls to Oglethorpe in Sonny Carter Invite Finale

Atlanta, GA| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Oglethorpe University on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Sonny Carter Invitational played in Atlanta, GA. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 0-2-0 on the season, while Oglethorpe improved to 1-1-1.

The Stormy Petrels tallied on their first shot on goal, which came in the fourth minute, when Martijn Edelmen headed home a deflected corner attempt for his first of the season. Oglethorpe continued to apply pressure, but St. Joseph's keeper Spencer Hoek was up to the task, making saves in the 11th, 12th and 15th minutes.

St. Joseph's tested Oglethorpe's starting keeper Robert Goldin just once in the first—courtesy of a 20th minute shot by Alex Guadagno—and reached halftime without an equalizer.

Oglethorpe picked up where they left off in the second frame and added to their lead in the 47th minute, when Mason Earl banged home a rebound for his first goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles found a push-back in the 51st minute, when junior Justin Heredia forced Goldin into a save, which led to a St. Joseph's corner. But it was the Stormy Petrels that found the next goal, when Nick Muntean took an Ekow Annan pass one-time at the edge of the six-yard box to increase the Oglethorpe lead to three goals. The Stormy Petrels would usher that lead to the full-time whistle and ensured the Golden Eagles returned home winless.

Hoek set a career-high for saves in a game for the second-straight match, having been credited with 11 in Sunday's contest. Oglethorpe outshot the Golden Eagles 22-6 on the afternoon, and also won eight corners to St. Joseph's four.

Midfielder Gaetano Innamorato led the Golden Eagles with two shots on goal.

St. Joseph's will return to Long Island for its home opener on Wednesday, September 9, when Kean University arrives in Patchogue. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM at the Outdoor Field Complex.
