Drew Snaps Men’s Soccer’s Three-Game Win Streak

Madison, NJ| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night, as they suffered a 5-1 loss to Drew University on the road. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 5-9-1 on the season, while the Rangers improve to 10-2-2.

Sophomore Justin Busto propelled St. Joseph's to an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, when he buried a short cross from junior Justin Heredia for his fourth goal in as many games.

Drew responded quickly, netting a 13th minute goal shortly after a corner attempt. Joe Sollod played a cross into the box for a waiting Benjamin Audi, who chipped SJC keeper Avery Gomez for his eighth tally of the season. Anthony McMyne would inch the hosts in front in the 35th minute, when he pulled down a long pass from Brandon Koklch before beating the keeper.

The first half would draw to a close with the Rangers maintaining a 2-1 lead on the scoreboard and a 9-1 advantage in the shot department. Gomez was forced into making three saves in the opening frame, meanwhile his counterpart John Marques made none.

Alexi Velasquez opened the scoring for the hosts in the second half, when he slotted home a breakaway goal in the 48th minute. Bass Etta-Ashu extended the lead to 4-1 in the 64th minute, and Dylan Hammer's 68th minute tally sealed the 5-1 victory for the Rangers.

The Golden Eagles were outshot 20-2 in the match and also earned fewer corners (1-6). Gomez was credited with six saves in total.

With his assist on Busto's goal, Heredia extends his point-scoring streak to four games, during which he has recorded 10 points.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Saturday, October 17, when they travel to SUNY Maritime for a Skyline Conference showdown at 1:00 PM. Live stats will be available here.
