Men's Volleyball Falls Twice in Season Opener

Results:

The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) men's volleyball team dropped to contests to top-ranked teams to open the 2023 season in the Danzi Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles took #9 St. John Fisher University to five sets ultimately falling 3-2 before suffering a 3-0 sweep at the hands of #4 Stevens Institute of Technology.

Top performers:

  • Junior Mark Williams and senior Tyler Anderson led the team with 17 kills each

  • Senior Quinn Foglia and freshman Luke MacPherson each added 10 kills with Macpherson collecting a game-high 14 digs

  • Junior CJ Johnson had a game-high 54 assists with four kills and eight digs 

  • Josh Bigford led St. John Fisher with a game-high 23 kills 

  • Gabe La Robardiere and Matt Beiter of SJFU added 13 and 12 kills, respectively

How it happened:
  • The first set would go back and forth until the Golden Eagles down 10-11, went on a 9-2 scoring run that helped St. Josephs take the first set 25-19

  • A close second frame saw the score change hands several times until Fisher pulled away late to give the Cardinals the 26-24 win

  • SJLI would rally in the third set eventually going ahead 24-23. The Cardinals held off the hosts to knot the score at 24, but a kill and an ace from Anderson secured the 26-24 win

  • Fisher would take a commanding lead in the fourth going ahead as many as eight points to push the match to a decisive fifth set with a 25-18 victory

  • Momentum stayed in favor of the Cardinal who led wire-to-wire in the fifth and claimed the match with a 15-7 set win

Vs. #4 Stevens Institute of Technology

Top Performers:
  • A 10-kill performance by Anderson led the Golden Eagles. The senior added a team-best six kills and a pair of blocks

  • Williams added seven kills with four digs and finished with three blocks

  • Johnson dished 23 assists with three digs and an ace

  • Stevens was paced by Percy Bickford with 13 kills while hitting at a .440 clip

  • Setter Louden Moran tossed 25 assists with libero Phu-Quy Ho picking up a match-best 10 digs

How it happened
  • The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as seven, 10-3, before chipping away to within one, 17-16. Four unanswered points in favor of the Ducks provided enough distance for the visitors to claim set on 25-19

  • Stevens again came out with a strong start leading 5-1 early in set two. SJLI evened the score at 6, but back-to-back points in favor of the Ducks gave them a lead that they wouldn't relinquish for a 25-21 win

  • Set three saw both teams deadlocked at 11 before the Ducks again were the beneficiary of back-to-back points to gain a lead that they would hold for the 25-22 win

Next up, the Golden Eagles return to action to take on #2 Springfield at the Danzi Center on January 21 at 3:00 pm.
