Men's Volleyball Claims Second Straight Skyline Tournament Title in Five-Set Thriller

The St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's volleyball team claimed their second-consecutive Skyline Conference Championship Tournament title over Ramapo College in a five-set thriller in the Danzi Center on Saturday.

Top Performers
  • Junior Mark Williams paced the Golden Eagles with a team-best 23 kills while hitting at a .405 clip. The outside hitter added a team-high 11 digs  and four assists 

  • Freshman Luke MacPherson pitched in with 14 kills and eight digs

  • Senior Tyler Anderson finished in double figures with 12 kills and a .423 hitting percentage

  • Junior CJ Johnson recorded a match-high 56 assists and five blocks. The setter added six kills and five digs

How it happened:
  • A closely played set one and two saw a combined 25 tied scores and eight lead changes with both finishing 25-23 in favor of the Roadrunners

  • Facing elimination, the Golden Eagles held a slight 19-17 lead before three unanswered points put the hosts ahead 22-17. The teams exchanged points down the stretch before a service ace from Williams secured the 25-20 win

  • Momentum stayed in favor of the Golden Eagles in set four as they hit at a .650 clip led by an eight-kill performance by Williams for a 25-15 win sending the match to a decisive fifth set

  • A strong start for St. Joseph's saw them leading 8-3 when the team switched sides. The Roadrunners chipped way to get within three, 11-8, but a kill from Johnson and a block from Williams created some distance before a Ramapo service error secured the set for Golden Eagles 15-10

Notes
  • For his efforts throughout the tournament, Johnson was named the Most Outstanding Player for the second straight year 

  • Williams' 23 kills tied a program record for kills in a single match

  • St. Joseph's tallied 68 kills compared to Ramapo's 57

  • SJLI finished with six service aces and 12 blocks to the Roadrunners' three aces and three blocks

The Golden Eagles advance to the NCAA Div. III Regional Tournament and will learn their opponent during the selection show scheduled for Monday, April 18 at 10:00 am.
