Eagles Swirl Past Cyclones in Kicks for Cancer Game

Patchogue, N.Y. — The Lady Eagles (13-5-1) were absolutely golden yesterday, not only topping their Centenary Cyclone (5-9-1) opponents, 2-0, but also designating the match as their Kicks for Cancer game in an effort to raise both money and awareness.  The women's soccer team ultimately raised an outstanding $2,500 by selling apparel for the Kicks for Cancer cause, a fundraising effort that supports both cancer research and the families of children battling the disease.

The first half of the game was essentially uneventful as offensive efforts from both teams were unsuccessful but the Eagles kicked it into gear in the second half and at 53:22 Jennifer Martino (East Patchogue, N.Y. / Bellport) fired a shot and scored after a practiced assist from Samantha Garcia (Central Islip, N.Y./ St. John the Baptist). SJC succeeded in maintaining this intensity and offensive pressure as a Martino pass found Katelyn Chiasera (Smithtown, N.Y. / Hauppauge) who then shot and scored, expertly placing her shot in the upper right hand corner of the net at 76:23 and sealing the win for the home team.

SJC keeper, Cristiana Votta (East Islip, N.Y. / East Islip), made an impressive seven saves; the Eagles logged nine shots on goal as a team.

The Lady Golden Eagles, who have now officially achieved a third seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament, will host their first round playoff game against the Purchase Panthers on Saturday, November 2 at 1 p.m.
