Baseball Suffers a 7-1 Defeat to Kean University on Thursday Afternoon

Patchogue, NY| On Thursday, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team suffered a 7-1 defeat to Kean University in a non-conference tilt at Gregg Alfano Field. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 8-6 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 13-7.

Kean and SJC found themselves in a 1-1 tie before Kean scored four runs in the seventh and added two insurance runs in the ninth in a 7-1 result. 

Matt Burnett and Lou Doria each had two hits for the Golden Eagles.

Steve Santigate was 3-for-4 with a three-run homerun for Kean while Jim Fitzgerald was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Tyler Hopman received the win in his 2.2 innings in relief, PJ Martino started for SJC tossing six innings allowing one run on the afternoon.

Kean went ahead 1-0 in the sixth inning when Matt Krupa doubled to center to drive in Jim Fitzgerald. SJC evened it in the bottom of the sixth as Burnett doubled to right field to lead off the inning and Piscitelli single to right field, driving in Burnett to tie the game.

But Kean moved back in front with four runs in the seventh. Frank Urso reached on an error and Brock Podgurski walked before Santigate crushed a three-run homer. Brian Cole reached on first on an error to drive in Mike Fidanza.

With runners on the corners, in the top of the ninth, Cole and Krupa both reached safely to push across the sixth and seventh run to seal the 7-1 victory.
The Golden Eagles continue conference play on Saturday, April 1st when they welcome sister-school St. Joseph's College (Brkln) at 12 and 3PM. Live stats will be available here.
