Baseball Scores 5 Unanswered Runs To Rally Past Baruch 5-4

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team scored five unanswered run to take down the Baruch College Bearcats, 5-4, in a non-conference game at Gregg Alfano field late Thursday evening. With the win the Golden Eagles are now 22-12, while the Bearcats fall to 12-17.

The Bearcats got the scoring started in the top of the third after three consecutive singles loaded up the bases for Gilberto Mendoza who drove in the first run after a fielder's choice.  Baruch scored two more runs courtesy of a double steal and a wild pitch to take the 3-0 advantage over SJC.

In the top of the fourth with runners on the corners, Baruch increased its lead by one after scoring on a passed ball to inch ahead 4-0.

The Golden Eagles answered back with three runs in the sixth when Lou Doria smashed a three run homer plating home Matt Burnett, who singled, and Paul Britt who reached on base after a walk to cut SJC's deficit 4-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Andrew Libertelli singled through the right side to begin the inning and later advanced to third on a groundout and wild pitch. Burnett tallied his second hit of the contest driving in Libertelli and knotted the game 4-4.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Tyler Costa walked and stole second to get in scoring position when Lou Fonthina hit a single to center field plating Fonthina for the go-ahead run.

Justin Fitzpatrick game in to close out the game in the ninth and fanned one batter and got two groundouts to earn his third career save and seal the 5-4 win.

Burnett led the team in hits (2), while classmate Doria knocked in three runs with his homerun in the third.

The Golden Eagles will fight for the right to host the Skyline Conference Baseball Championship when they take on Purchase College for a doubleheader on Saturday April 29 at 11:15 AM.  Live stats will be available here.
