Baseball Drops Non-Conference Tilt to William Paterson

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College baseball team suffered an 8-6 non-conference loss to William Paterson University at Gregg Alfano Field on Wednesday evening.

The loss puts SJC at 8-7 on the season as the Pioneers improve to 13-5.

After both teams put up a run in the first inning, the Pioneers pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the third and the fourth for a 5-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth four Tyler Sanderson who singled to left bringing in Tyler Crafa. A wild pitch and passed ball allowed two more SJC runs to cross before Charles Rainone doubled to right sending in Sanderson and tying the game at five.

Following a scoreless sixth, WPU's Carlos Perez worked a leadoff walk prompting an SJC pitching change. A fielder's choice put two runners on for Steve DiGirolamo whose bunt base hit loaded the bases with no outs. A pop up to the short stop recorded the first out of the inning, and an infield groundball followed but Steve Yelin beat the throw to first allowing Carlos Perez to score the go-ahead run.

A couple Pioneer runs in the top of the ninth provided some insurance moving the score to 8-5.

The Golden Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth where a wild pitch scored Justin Stromski cutting the deficit to two, 8-6, but WPU's Eric Rosenberg got Sanderson to groundout for the final out and secure the win.

SJC's James McAleavy finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Sanderson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

WPU's Matt Lawler earned the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

St. Joseph's starter Ryan Foran took the loss allowing six runs on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings.

The Golden Eagles return to Gregg Alfano Field on Saturday, March 30 when they host SUNY Old Westbury for a Skyline double header. Game one is slated for an 11:00 am start.
